  1. Over cleansing your curls:

This is probably the most common mistake girls with curls make. No doubt, cleaning your hair regularly prevents the build-up of dirt and dandruff, but if you have curls then it should be at a minimum. Hair with waves or twists needs sufficient retention of your scalps natural oils to keep it moisturised, soft and sleek. Your frequent use of shampoo can cause it to dry out which leads to hair damage or breakage. Cleaning it once or twice a week using a high-quality hair product should do the trick.

  1. Skipping Conditioner:

Textured hair is prone to becoming dry and dull because of how difficult it is for the scalps natural oils to make it down the hair shafts twist and turns. This is why it is crucial that you include the use of a good hydrating conditioner on your entire hair.

Applying a sufficient amount of conditioner weekly or as often as you can into your curls, will help to evenly distribute additional moisture throughout your hair strands. You should look for hair products filled with moisturizing ingredients like coconut oil, aloe vera, shea butter etc to hydrate your curls and prevent damages.

  1. Blow drying your hair the wrong way:

Using a blow dryer the wrong way, can significantly change and alter your curls unique pattern for good. To achieve curls with definition and volume by blow-drying, be sure to set your blow dryer on medium and attach a diffuser. This helps to protect your curls and prevent any undesirable outcome.

  1. Using the wrong hair tools to detangle your curls:

Every now and then, your curls are going to form a knot that you will need to untangle. Using the wrong hair tool such as a comb with a fine-tooth can easily ruin your distinct hair curls and cause breakages. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers and detangling spray to gently work your way from the bottom of your hair upwards. This way you can loosen any knots with less pain and little or no hair breakages.

  1. Not protecting your hair before bed:

This is yet another mistake a lot of curly girls make with their hair. It is extremely important to protect your hair before sleeping using the right material. Try tying your hair in a silk, satin or polyester scarf as it does not absorb the moisture of your hair strands like cotton or other materials would. You can also sleep using a silk pillowcase which helps to retain your curls pattern and lessen the friction between your hair strands.
